Evacuation Considerations for
People with Disabilities
- Prearrange appropriate evacuation procedures for people with disabilities, particularly non-ambulatory individuals, and the people assigned to assist them. Considerations include:
- Ways of being moved or guided.
- The number of people necessary for assistance. If carrying a person more than three flights, a relay team may be needed.
- Whether to extend or move extremities when lifting because of pain, braces, etc.
- Whether a seat cushion or pad should be brought along.
- Being carried forward or backward on stairs.
- Aftercare, especially if a person is removed from their wheel chair.
- Proceed immediately to an exit corridor or smoke-protected stairwell when evacuating a building. Campus rescue personnel are instructed to check all exit corridors and exit stairwells first. Never use an elevator for evacuation during an emergency. Use the stairs instead.
